The Prince of Wales – A Proper Pint of History

Est. 1866 | Rebuilt 1925

Monarch: Queen Victoria (cheers, ma’am!)

Let’s be honest – we tried digging up the full history of the Prince of Wales pub, but it turns out it’s a bit of a mystery. Established in the Victorian era and lovingly rebuilt in 1925, the details are fuzzy… which feels rather fitting for a good old-fashioned boozer.

Back then, Wilton Road didn’t even exist – it was called Hindon Street, and as for what went on there? Well, let’s just say Google came up dry. But we like to imagine our pub as the local haunt for the hardworking folks from the surrounding mews houses – servants of the grand mansions, popping in after a long day for a well-earned tipple. Who wouldn’t?

Over the years, this quiet corner of Pimlico has seen its fair share of famous faces. In 1940, fascist leader Oswald Mosley was arrested just down the road in Dolphin Square (not our usual clientele, thankfully). Days later, Winston Churchill – who once lived in Ecclestone Square and welcomed two of his children there – became Prime Minister. We like to picture him nipping in to wet the baby’s head. Seems likely, right?

A young Laurence Olivier grew up nearby too, inspired by his sermon-giving dad at the local church – and it shows! And let’s not forget Lady Diana Spencer, who worked just around the corner at the Young England Kindergarten before catching the eye of a certain Prince. We’d like to think she walked past our pub once or twice.

These days, the Prince of Wales is still serving the good stuff – complete with carved woodwork, cosy bar stools, old photos, and a “hello, love” kind of welcome. When you pop in, don’t be surprised if the locals treat you like an old friend.

We’re here, we’re pouring, and we’re proud of it.
